Slightly scary
I told Ian (my “sponsor”, to whom I’m supposed to go for help in the first instance) that I didn’t really have anything to do today. He said he’d try to think of something useful, and came back a little while later asking me to write a program that would be used in the system he’s currently working on. A real program, which will at some point go live in the production environment. A bit weird. After I’d found the input-file copybook, and looked through another program which used it, it took me a while before I gathered together enough confidence to get going on the program. It really is very simple, but the thought that it would be relied upon made me rather nervous. But this is my job now… no doubt I’ll get used to it quite quickly. It was actually really good to have something specific to do, and also somewhat encouraging that I was trusted to do it with minimal supervision.
Anyway, I finished the program and scribbled a list of tests for a test pack which I’ll do next week. I fear I may have gone overboard slightly, but I suppose that’s better than the alternative. After that, went to the social club at 171 Victoria St to meet Dave, Lyn and spiky (without an e) Neil. It’s nice in there. It’ll be a few months before I’m working there, though.
