Welcome!

I have given up resisting. It was only a matter of time, after all. I have a domain and webhosting, but a poor excuse for a website. Why? I’ve got nothing worthwhile to put on a website, that’s why. Solution: demonstrate fully how unimaginative I am by setting up a weblog. So here it is. Ladies, gentlemen and spambots, I give you… [fanfare] BanniBlog.

Here I may (or may not) record assorted thoughts on those matters I consider worth my attention, including (but not limited to):

  1. Music – more on this anon.
  2. Apple computers & other Mac-related stuff.
  3. Programming. I am currently employed by the John Lewis Partnership as a Trainee Programmer, and am about to begin the fourth week of my five-week training course in COBOL and DB2. My previous programming experience has included (at very varying levels, but mostly pretty basic) C, Java, PHP and Standard ML (cool language, not sure it’s terribly useful though), and COBOL is quite different. I don’t dislike it in the way I’d expected to — in fact I’d say it’s pretty good for what it’s mainly used for — but it’s weird when you’re used to a language with, for example, local variables, and all of a sudden every variable is global. Makes naming a right pain in the posterior.

As you can probably tell by the above paragraph, I could conceivably be described as a geek. I will not actively try to dispel that impression. I’d like to think I’m not 100% geek, though. I frequently look at people’s faces during conversation. I drink far more tea than coffee. And… um… other stuff.

I will be editing the appearance of this site in the near future. Not quite sure what I’ll be doing, but don’t expect it to look the same on consecutive visits – I have no qualms about hacking a live site! ;-) (I will definitely be changing those phpBB smilies, though – I much prefer Jason’s (as on YaBB)).
